Re: Correct the Sentences!
Hi! How do you do?
Well, there's one problem in the 'bedroom' sentence (sentence 2). At the second floor of my house is my bedroom. Look at the preposition.
There's one little thing regarding sentence 5, He wanted to know if I went to the disco the night before. Think of reporting tenses. The adverb of time is OK, mainly keeping in mind there's a particular change when reporting.
OK, let's see... Oops!
1. He did shew of with his classmates yesterday. (I don't get what this sentence means... Sorry! )
2. I brougth up my son by myself. --> I brought my son up by myself - on my own (one more possibility) (separable phrasal verb)
3. I don't want to gave in to my fears. --> I don't want to give in to my fears (use of infinitive)
4. There are times I got so discouraged. --> There are times I get so discouraged or There were times I got so discouraged (Coherence in the use of tenses)
5. I surrender all I keeping from you (This sentence is not clear to me. I wonder whether it means 'I return/give back everything I kept from you'... I'm not certain about it)

Re: Correct the Sentences!
It's interesting reading these, because I've heard native English speakers make some of these mistakes. Likewise, a couple of the sentences given to be corrected appear fine to me lol. And I won't correct sentences because these are for you all to learn. I just wanted to interject .

Thank you for your comment, T'ani!
Of course we also learn a lot from you! Would you please let us know which were these sentences that were corrected despite being OK?
By the way... You're right! It's incredible how we make mistakes even in our own language. We never stop learning, even though life's long!

Re: Correct the Sentences!
Many of these sentences would be fine if the punctuation was slightly different, though obviously when speaking you wouldn't notice. I'll start from the top.
I have studied English since 7 years ago.
Technically this isn't a perfect sentence, but this is not something I would find unusual in the right context. Suppose someone asked you, "Since when have you studied English?" In which case this answer would suffice.
I'd like to know where did you buy these beautiful shoes.
The correction given for this sentence was correct, however when playing around with punctuation or pauses in speech, this too would work. For example:
I'd like to know - where did you buy these beautiful shoes?
This would sound perfectly normal.
Actually, I'm not working.
Again, this phrase deals with contextual issues. The correction given is correct, though if one were asked, "Do you work today?" One might respond by saying, "Actually, I'm not working." This response would be considered somewhat informal, but not unusual.
He wanted to know if I went to the disco the night before.
The given correction would suffice, assuming of course that 'the night before' was actually 'last night'. However, if narrative a series of events that took place some time ago, this wording could be used and not sound unusual. For example:
Last month James called me after his party. He wanted to know if I went to the disco the night before.
*Correct grammar dictates 'I went' should be 'I'd gone', but most English speakers will use the given sentence.
I brought up my son all by myself.
This one seems fine to me. Word order could be changed to sound a little better (I brought my son up all by myself.) but most people wouldn't think twice if you said this in conversation.
My brother never has driven a car.
See above. My brother has never driven a car sounds a little better, but either way works.
My best friends haven't any sibling.
I brought this one up because I wasn't sure if it was a typo or not. 'My best friends haven't any siblings.' This would sound fine to me, and is quite formal.
edit: I knew I missed one.
Everyone congratulated Mr.X for his success in catching the burglar.
There is really not much to be said about this one. It looks fine.

Thanks for the clarifications!
So, in the case of the last sentence, you can congratulate someone in doing something?
I guess that's one of the things language learners have to struggle with: correctness in grammar versus correctness in everyday use.

Well, that's half right. You can congradulate someone on their success in something. It all kinda depends on what's going on in a given situation; they usually end up going hand in hand. I suppose that adds to some single sentence confusion-with any single sentence, many inferences can be made depending on the context from which it comes.

I see, the collocation succeed in doing something. Many English learners seem to forget this preposition!
OK, let's try some new sentences:
1. Sleep less than 4 hours may affect your memory seriously.
2. If I had a lot of money, I would travel to another countries.
3. In contrast with Russian, English is easier to learn.
4. I read a book which it is about conspiracy theories.
5. You've arrived late once more! That's so typical in you!

Re: Correct the Sentences!
I'm not pretty sure but I will say in the first one it is SLEEPING instead of Sleep
In the second one is OTHER rather than another which is singular
For me the third one is right
In the fourth it is not necessary to use the pronoun IT since 'which' replace it.
And, in the last one, for me it is not necessary the use of present perfect. For me it would be: You arrive late once more! That's so typical in you
So my sentences:
1. If I had had enough money I would study in Andes University
2. A decrease of the number of costumers makes us to reduce the number of employees
3. The doctor suggest me to make more exercise
4. He also advice me to stop eating too many hamburgers

Re: Correct the Sentences!
1. Sleeping less than 4 hours may affect your memory seriously. Very good! We use a gerund in here.
2. If I had a lot of money, I would travel to other countries. Correct! Another is used with singular nouns.
3. In contrast with Russian, English is easier to learn. Check prepositions.
4. I read a book whichit is about conspiracy theories. Correct! It's a subject relative clause, so you must omit it.
5. You've arrived late once more! That's so typical in you! Jose, The exclamation doesn't remark a general situation but a recent one, so Present Simple is not the best choice. Here you can use either past simple or present perfect. And the mistake is in the second sentence.
1. If I hadhad enough money I would study at Andes University
or If I had had enough money I would have studied at Andes University
or If I hadhad enough money I would have studied at Andes University (mixed conditional).
2. A decrease in the number of costumers makes (made) usto reduce the number of employees
3. The doctor suggest me doing more exercise.
4. He also advice me to stop eating too many hamburgers. Gee! I think this sentence is correct. You're using an infinitive after using the expression advice someone to do, and in this sentence stop is followed by a gerund.

Re: Correct the Sentences!
Okay, so This bring me some questions.
I knew that 'In contrast to' and 'In contrast with' were the same, aren't they?
Is that the mistake in sentence number 3? Because apart from that I couldn't think of another mistake
And, finally, in the last one is it 'That's so typical on you!' or 'That's so typical of you!'?
In the last one I proposed, I thought about the differences between the verb and the noun. Isn't it correct to use 'Advice' as a noun and 'Advise' as a verb? or is it just optional?
This thread remember me how I love English and why it's one of my best passions besides Coldplay and Photography

Re: Correct the Sentences!
It depends on the English version you're using - either American or English.Misor wrote:I thought about the differences between the verb and the noun. Isn't it correct to use 'Advice' as a noun and 'Advise' as a verb? or is it just optional?
British English = Practise (v) and Practice (n)
American English = Practice (v) and Practice (n)
Kind of the same happens with Advice.
