Gnome Reporting In!
Hello, my name is Gnome. I'd like to be part of this community. My question though is what type of English are you aiming to learn: British or American?

Hi, Gnome! Welcome to English4Fun!
It's a total pleasure to have you here! I truly hope you enjoy your stay!
I find your question interesting. The thing is this: while most of the material to learn English you can find now is in British English, most of us use American English - I dare to think it's because of media.
Gnome, could you please let us know more about you? We're really happy to have you as a member of our family! And I'm sure your contributions will be like a treasure!
Welcome along!

Re: Gnome Reporting In!
I'm in college, just bumming around. I came here hoping to find interesting things to learn.
That's interesting. What type of study material are you using? If you'd like to get a good holding on American English syntax, I suggest The Holt Handbook. It's my go-to guide.
Do you read the BBC? The grammar is very different.

Re: Gnome Reporting In!
I read and listen to the BBC a lot! And I've got to say I get puzzled by lots of expressions in many occasions! Besides understanding how endless language is, it also makes me see getting to manage one of the Englishes is going to take a lot of time!
I don't know in the case of Nicole, in the case of people here in Colombia we use textbooks from publishers such as Oxford, Cambridge, Longman, Express Publishing, etc. with books which have got topical units, each one of them with grammar and vocabulary points to exercise, plus basic skills such as listening, reading, writing and speaking. From time to time we turn to grammar books to reinforce what we've just learnt.
I'm going to see if it's possible for me to get the Holt Handbook. It seems to be an interesting reference to study!

Hello Gnome
welcome to the E4F family.
In my case we use books like Oxford, Langenscheidt and own books from my school Inlingua. I try to listen many things in English but I can't hear bbc often because there is no way to get it without net but I listen to cd's and podcasts from spotlight in my car. Spotlight it's a magazin to improve your english skills.
